It was race 5 in the V8 Supercars Dunlop series last weekend, as the Challenger team took on their most dramatic transformation yet, making the switch from a Holden to Ford V8 for the Coates Hire Ipswich SuperSprint.
After struggling to find the same momentum with the heavily damaged Holden chasis from Clipsal, driver Brett made the temporary switch to an ex Kelly Commodore in Townsville before finally securing Jim Pollicina’s Ford for the final three races.
With a renewed energy and new car, the team made the most of their fresh start and focused on getting as much on-track time as possible.
Friday was an easy day of practice as Brett acquainted himself with his new set of wheels, clocking his fastest lap at 1:12.3419. A good first effort but still 1.6467 seconds behind the lead of the series.
After qualifying 19th on Saturday, Brett readied himself for Race 1 where he managed to jump 4 places to finish 15th. He finished the 19 lap race in under 24 mins, a positive result for the 1st of 3 races that weekend. Already the new car was starting to look positive, as were the Challenger team.
On Sunday it was a quick change of springs before getting right back into the drivers seat, as Brett battled it out in the 23 strong pack and did a great job of holding onto 15th position in Race 2. By Race 3 we were still going strong with a slight drop one place to 16th, but with barely a scratch on the car and a full weekend of incident free racing it was just what the team were after.
Overall a great first run in the new Ford for Brett, who finally got in some good time on the track and positive results before the next big race. With 2 months now to prepare for the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and The Mountain, we can’t wait to see how the Challenger Team goes. Well done to everyone involved!
Until next weekend!
